Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns replace the nouns of people or things. These pronouns are divided into different categories: (a) subject pronouns, (b) direct object pronouns, (c) indirect object pronouns, (d) disjunctive pronouns, and (e) adverb.

Direct Object Pronouns Le pronom objet direct

A noun that is a direct object answers the question what or whom?

I buy the dress. ->

J'achète la robe. -^

/ buu what? The dress. J'achète quoi? La robe.

/ see Michael. Je vois Michel.

-> / see whom?Michael. -» Je vois qui? Michel.

The direct object pronoun follows the same rule.

/ buy it. Je l'achète.

I see him. Je le vois.

-> I buy what? It. (the dress]

-> J'achète quoi? L'. (la robe)

-> / see whom? (Michael)

-> Je vois qui? (Michel)

The direct object pronoun is placed before the verb. When, however, two verbs follow each other, the second one is always in the infinitive. In this case, the object pronoun is placed between the conjugated verb and the infinitive.

Nous regardons les photos. Nous les regardons. Nous allons les regarder. Nous regardons les enfants. Nous les regardons. Nous allons les regarder.

We look at the pictures.

We look at them.

We are going to look at them.

We look at the children.

We look at them,.

We are going to look at them..

*Se and s' are used in conjugating pronominal verbs (reflexive or reciprocal).

**Soi means oneself hut. can also mean himself in expressions such as chacun pour soi (each

man for himself).
